Die-cut vs kiss-cut vs sticker sheets: what’s the difference?

Die-cut vs kiss-cut vs sticker sheets: what’s the difference?

A die-cut sticker is cut all the way through to the shape of your design; a kiss-cut sticker is cut through the top layer only and left on a square backing; and a sticker sheet holds several kiss-cut stickers on one backing. All three start from the same printed vinyl – the difference is how they are cut and peeled.

Die-cut

The sticker and its backing are both cut to the outline of your design, so it peels away as one clean shape with no border. It looks premium and is the go-to for logos and custom shapes.

Kiss-cut

Only the vinyl is cut, leaving your design on a larger square or rectangular backing. The extra border makes it easy to peel (handy for giveaways) and lets you add a border or branding around the design.

Sticker sheets

Several designs, or several copies of one design, kiss-cut together on a single sheet. Great value when you want a set – think a pack of small logos, icons or characters peeled off one by one.

How each one is made

All three are printed on the same vinyl, laminated the same way, then cut by a plotter that follows the dieline in your file. The only variable is blade depth. A kiss-cut kisses through the vinyl and adhesive but stops at the backing paper. A die-cut goes all the way through both. Sheets simply arrange multiple kiss-cuts inside one bordered rectangle. Because the material and print are identical, durability is the same across all three – the choice is about presentation and how the sticker gets handed out or applied.

Where each format shines

Die-cut is the choice when the shape is the point – a logo, a mascot, a custom outline that you want to read instantly with no square border around it. It is what most people picture as a “proper” custom sticker. Kiss-cut suits giveaways, stall handouts and mail-outs, because the border makes peeling foolproof and protects the edges in transit. It also lets you print a coloured or branded backing around the shape. Sheets are ideal for merch packs, kids’ activity sets, loyalty stickers and any job where a customer should get several pieces in one hit.

Peel, durability and packing

Die-cut edges are slightly more exposed, which is fine for a laptop or bottle but means very thin points or narrow tails can catch and lift – worth rounding those in the artwork. Kiss-cut backings shield the edges, so they travel and store well and are easier for people with less nimble fingers to peel. For mailing, kiss-cut and sheets sit flat in an envelope; die-cuts are often supplied on a backing card for the same reason.

How to choose

  • Single branded shape, premium feel: die-cut.
  • Easy-peel handouts or a printed border: kiss-cut.
  • A set or multipack in one go: sticker sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Does die-cut cost more than kiss-cut?

Not dramatically, since the print and material are the same. Cost is driven more by size, quantity and finish than by the cut style. We quote each job so you can compare.

Can I mix different designs on one sheet?

Yes. Sheets are perfect for a set of different icons, characters or logos kiss-cut together, or for multiple copies of one design.

Which is best for a laptop or water bottle?

Die-cut for the clean, borderless look most people want on personal gear. Kiss-cut works too if you like a visible border or want easier peeling.

Do I need to draw the cut line myself?

No. If you supply clean artwork we will create the dieline for you. If you do supply one, keep it smooth and avoid tiny spikes so it cuts cleanly.

Backing, edges and how they feel in the hand

Small differences in the backing change the experience of using each format. A kiss-cut backing gives you something to grip, which matters for older customers, kids and anyone peeling in a hurry at a stall. It also protects the sticker edge through the post, so mail-out campaigns arrive without dog-eared corners. Die-cut singles feel more like a finished object – people treat them as a keepsake and are more likely to stick them somewhere visible. Sheets read as a collectible set, which is why they work so well for merch drops, launch packs and anything you want people to keep and display piece by piece.

Ordering the right format for your campaign

Think about how the sticker gets into someone’s hands. Handing out singles at an event? Die-cut looks the part. Posting a thank-you sticker with an online order? Kiss-cut survives the journey and peels cleanly. Selling a character or icon range? A sheet lets a customer buy several designs at once and lifts your average order. We print all three from the same artwork, so you can even run a die-cut hero sticker alongside a matching sheet for retail, keeping the look consistent across formats while suiting each use.

We print all three – see our custom sticker printing, browse vinyl stickers, or get a quote.
