How to set up a sticker file for print (bleed and cut lines)

A print-ready sticker file has four things: your design at the finished size with 3mm bleed, a clearly marked cut line for the die-cut shape, CMYK colour, and images at 300dpi. Get these right and your sticker cuts and prints exactly as intended.

Bleed and safe area

Extend any background colour or image 3mm past where the sticker will be cut, so there is no white edge if the cut shifts slightly. Keep important text and logos a few millimetres inside the cut line so nothing important sits too close to the edge.

The cut line

For a die-cut or kiss-cut sticker, add a separate vector path (often called a cut line or dieline) showing the exact shape you want cut, on its own layer or spot colour. Keep it smooth – very fine spikes and tiny gaps do not cut cleanly. No cut line? We will create one around your design for you.

Colour and resolution

Design in CMYK so colours print as expected, and make sure any photos or raster art are 300dpi at the final size so the sticker looks sharp, not fuzzy. Vector art stays crisp at any size.

File formats

A layered vector PDF, AI or EPS is ideal. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background works for the artwork, but we will still add the cut line. Not confident? Send what you have – we check every file for free.

Drawing a clean dieline

If you are supplying your own cut line, name it clearly (for example “CutContour”) and set it as a spot colour so it does not print. Keep the path as a single closed shape with gentle curves rather than dozens of tiny anchor points, and avoid sharp internal spikes and needle-thin tails that the blade cannot follow. Give the cut a little breathing room around your artwork – roughly 2 to 3mm of offset so the shape has a small margin rather than slicing right against your design. For text-heavy or intricate logos, a simple rounded outline usually cuts cleaner and looks better than tracing every notch.

Sizing, quantity and finish notes

Set your document to the real finished size rather than scaling up later, because scaling a raster file after the fact drops its effective resolution. If you want a border around the artwork, build it into the design and place the cut line outside it. Tell us the finish you are after – gloss, matte, clear or metallic – because clear and dark stocks need a white-ink layer, and that is built from your file. Flag any elements that must sit under white ink so we set them up correctly.

Common file mistakes we catch

• RGB colours: screens use RGB, print uses CMYK. Convert first so bright blues and greens do not shift.
• No bleed: a background that stops at the cut risks a white sliver. Extend it 3mm past.
• Low-resolution logos: a small web image prints fuzzy. Supply vector or 300dpi art.
• Un-outlined fonts: if we do not have your font, text reflows. Outline your type or send the font.
• Text on the edge: keep important content a few millimetres inside the cut line.

Frequently asked questions

What if I only have a JPG or PNG?

Send it. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is workable, and we will build the cut line for you. Vector art is better if you have it, but we will always check what you supply.

How much bleed do stickers need?

3mm of bleed on all sides is the standard. It covers the small movement that happens during cutting so your design never shows a white edge.

Do I have to convert to CMYK myself?

It helps, because you see the colour shift and can adjust. If you cannot, we will convert and flag anything that changes noticeably before we print.

Can you make my cut line for me?

Yes, at no extra step. Supply clean artwork – ideally with a transparent background – and we will draw a smooth dieline and show it on your proof.

Proofs and why they matter

Once your file is set up, we send a digital proof showing the artwork with its cut line so you can check the size, the shape, the spelling and the colours before anything runs. This is your chance to catch a typo, a logo that sits too close to the edge, or a colour that came out darker than expected. Approving the proof is what locks the job in, so take a proper look – view it at actual size, check any small text is legible, and confirm the cut line traces the shape you want. A minute on the proof saves a reprint later.

A quick pre-flight checklist

• Document set to the real finished size, with 3mm bleed on all sides.
• A smooth, closed cut line on its own layer or spot colour, offset slightly from the artwork.
• Colours in CMYK; note any Pantone or brand references for us to match.
• Photos and raster art at 300dpi at final size; logos supplied as vector where possible.
• Fonts outlined, or the font files supplied with the file.
• Anything for clear or dark stock flagged so we can set up the white-ink layer.
