Sticker finishes explained: gloss, matte, clear, metallic and more

Gloss makes colours pop, matte is understated and glare-free, clear gives a no-label look, and metallic or holographic finishes add shine and shimmer. The finish changes how your sticker feels and photographs as much as the design does.
Gloss and matte
A gloss laminate is shiny and makes colours and photos vivid – great for bold, image-led designs. A matte laminate is smooth and non-reflective for a modern, understated look, hides fingerprints, and cuts glare under bright light.
Clear stickers
Printed on transparent vinyl, clear stickers let the surface show through so only your design appears – the no-label look that suits glass, bottles and minimalist branding. Pair with white ink so light colours still show up.
Metallic, holographic and specialty
A metallic (silver/gold) stock gives a premium, foil-like shimmer; holographic vinyl throws rainbow highlights that catch the eye on merch and packaging. Ask about kraft for a natural, recycled look too.
White ink — the secret ingredient
On clear or dark materials, we print a layer of white ink beneath your colours so they stay bright instead of disappearing into the surface. It is what makes full-colour designs work on clear and dark stickers.
The finish is a laminate, not just a look
It helps to know that gloss and matte are usually the laminate film applied over the print, and that film does real work beyond appearance. It shields the ink from scratches, water and UV, and it is what makes a sticker dishwasher-tough and outdoor-ready. So the finish decision is partly about looks and partly about protection. A matte laminate on a premium product label feels soft and refined; a gloss laminate on an outdoor logo sticker throws off water and keeps colours punchy for years. Both add durability that an unlaminated print does not have.
How finish changes the way a design reads
Gloss deepens contrast and saturates colour, so photography, illustrations and vibrant brand colours look their best. Matte flattens reflections, which makes fine type and subtle tones easier to read and gives a calmer, more expensive feel – popular for cosmetics, spirits and minimalist branding. Clear disappears into glass and gloss plastics for a no-label look. Metallic and holographic are attention-grabbers built for retail shelves and merch, where the shimmer does half the marketing. If your stickers will be photographed for social media, matte avoids hotspots from ring lights while gloss can look richer in natural light.
How to choose a finish
- Bold, colourful or photographic design: gloss.
- Premium, understated, lots of fine text: matte.
- Glass, bottles or a no-label look: clear with white ink.
- Retail merch that needs to stand out: metallic or holographic.
- Natural, eco-leaning indoor branding: kraft.
Frequently asked questions
Does the finish affect durability?
Yes. A gloss or matte laminate adds scratch, water and UV resistance on top of the look. Unlaminated stickers are less hardy, so we recommend a laminate for anything handled or exposed.
Which finish is best for outdoors?
Both gloss and matte outdoor-grade laminates work outside. Gloss sheds water well and keeps colours vivid; matte cuts glare. The material and ink matter more than the sheen for outdoor life.
Will light colours show on a clear or dark sticker?
Only with a white-ink underprint. Without it, pale colours vanish into the surface. We add white ink beneath your artwork so everything stays bright.
Can I mix finishes on one sticker?
The base laminate is one finish across the sticker, but effects like a metallic stock combined with white ink and colour let you get selective shine. Tell us the look you want and we will spec it.
Finish and your brand
Your finish choice should follow your brand, not just personal taste. A skincare or spirits label often leans matte for a soft, premium feel, while a bold streetwear or hot-sauce brand suits gloss or holographic to grab attention on a shelf. Clear stickers give a clean, high-end look on glass jars and bottles where you want the product to show through. Whatever you pick, keep it consistent across your range so the fifth sticker a customer sees clearly belongs with the first. If you print stickers, labels and packaging with us, we can carry the same finish and colour approach across all of them.
Seeing a finish before you commit
Finishes read differently in person than on a screen – a matte that looks flat on a monitor can feel beautifully soft in the hand, and a metallic only shows its shimmer under real light. Because of that, we recommend approving a proof and, where it matters, looking at the stock in person before a big run. Lighting also changes the effect: gloss and metallic come alive in daylight, while matte holds up under the harsh downlights of a shop or venue. Tell us where your stickers will be seen and photographed, and we will steer you to a finish that performs in that setting.
