Window stickers vs window clings: which should you use?
A window sticker uses adhesive to stick firmly and suits longer-term signage, while a window cling uses static cling (no glue) so it peels off and repositions easily – ideal for short-term promotions. Both go on glass; the difference is how they hold on and how long they stay.
Window stickers
These have an adhesive backing that bonds to the glass, so they stay put through weather and cleaning. Use them for opening hours, logos, contact details and signage you want up for the long haul. They can go on the inside or outside of the glass, and come off cleanly when you are done.
Window clings
Clings hold on by static electricity, not glue, so you can peel and reposition them again and again without residue. That makes them perfect for seasonal sales, event promos and anything you will swap out regularly.
And one-way vision
For big shopfront or vehicle graphics, one-way vision film is perforated so you can print across the whole window while people inside still see out – a third option worth knowing about.
Inside-glass vs outside-glass printing
A detail that trips people up: a graphic applied to the inside of a window and read from the street must be printed and mounted differently to one applied outside. Face-adhesive (or “reverse”) stickers stick on the inside with the print facing out through the glass, which protects the ink from weather and vandalism – ideal for a shopfront in a busy strip. Outside application reads without any glass in the way and gives the most vivid result, but is more exposed. Durability, cleaning and removal
Adhesive window stickers, especially laminated ones, handle years of rain, sun and regular glass cleaning, and peel away cleanly at the end. Clings are less hardy and are meant to be temporary, but that is their strength – no residue, endless repositioning, and easy storage flat between uses so you can reuse a “Sale” cling next season. For both, apply to spotless glass: clean with isopropyl or a streak-free cleaner, dry fully, then squeegee from the centre out to push air bubbles to the edge.

Do window clings work on any glass?

Will an adhesive sticker damage my window?
No. Quality window vinyl peels away cleanly, and any faint residue on older applications lifts with a little warmth or glass cleaner.
Can I reuse a cling?
Yes – that is the point. Peel it off, store it flat on its backing, and reapply next time. Clings suit anything you swap out regularly.
Which lasts longer outdoors?

Getting a clean application on glass
Glass is unforgiving, so preparation is everything. Clean the window thoroughly with isopropyl or a streak-free cleaner and let it dry completely – any dust or film under the vinyl shows as a bubble or a lifted edge. Work in the shade rather than under direct sun, since hot glass makes adhesive grab too fast to reposition. For larger stickers and decals, use a hinge of masking tape to line the piece up, then peel the backing and squeegee from the centre outward to push air to the edges. A wet application – a light mist of soapy water – buys extra time to slide big graphics into place before the adhesive sets.
Common window-graphic mistakes
- Setting up artwork for the wrong side: inside-mounted graphics read through the glass, so the file must be reversed. Always tell us which side you are applying to.
- Applying to dirty or cold glass: both wreck the bond. Clean, dry and work at a moderate temperature.
- Choosing a cling for a permanent sign: it will drift and fall over time. Use adhesive vinyl for anything long-term.
- Ignoring text size: signage read from the footpath needs larger type than you think – we can advise on sizing for the viewing distance.
